Screenshot Grabs from Editing

Today we worked very hard on finishing editing our thriller opening as we are working with a tight deadline. We managed to name all the shots that we thought had potential to defer us from getting confused and using shots that did not have that good a quality (e.g. mise en scene, camera and lighting problems). We feel we are really making progress on our opening and cannot wait to see the final cut and everyone else's from AS media.

Editing - Day one

This is a rough cut of our thriller opening. We were unable to cut all of our shots and we haven't added the title sequences in but this has being a learning curve as we are more familiar with Final Cut Pro. We also havent edited our sound or put in our soundtrack yet. This also doesn't include our distortion edits we plan to put on.

Thriller Opening Storyboard

This is our storyboard animation of our thriller opening 'Aberration'. It contains all the shots we were thinking of using in our opening with detailed descriptions of the type of shot it will be and how long the shot itself will last.

Filming - Day two

Monday 13th February

Our second and more successful day of filming was spent at Emily's house in her cellar where we shot our entire film opening in the space of a whole day aka 6 hours. The cellar was dusty, dirty and dark and therefore the perfect setting for our opening. We moved most of the storage boxes and other stuff from the cellar and set up a room that looked like a lair which was perfect for our scene as we wanted the place to look creepy and weird. This was the end result of our makeover of Emily's cellar:

Since our character in the opening is supposed to be obsessed with War and the Military we stuck pictures of maps of the world onto the cellar wall and some pictures that had a War-esque feel to them to set the atmosphere in the cellar. We also used old boxes that look like they belonged from rationing times from World War II in the cellar to create the scene. We left the place dusty and dirty as we felt that this adds more to the creepiness of the location as you would not usually see this.

The brightness of the cellar lights were ideal as it focused on the mise en scène we wanted to be shown and left everything else in darkness which added a sense of a spotlight on the character and what he is doing which we thought would show its importance.

We highlighted the importance of the military and war by using figurines related to the war as props. We had our actor passionately act out a scene where he plays with the figurines and knocks them all down to demonstrate the killing of the red figurines by the green ones. We thought this was very important to the opening as it added a sense of what was to come and the way the figurines were so strategically set out we felt that it showed that he was planning something similar.

 Filming in progress.
Amine gets ready to knock the figurines over.

After a long and tiring day we were able to complete our filming and get all the shots needed; we returned the equipment the next day.

Filming - Day one

Saturday 11th February

We meet up at Angel Station at 1pm and decided to film our scenes at the Shopping Centre first as we were all free that day and there was no conflict with our schedules. However, upon arriving at the shopping centre we ran into many difficulties. The weather was excruciatingly indecisive as it was constantly raining and then stopping so it was difficult to film as it was raining quite heavily and we worried that damage may be caused to the equipment. Furthermore, it was very crowded in the centre and we were unable to get the shots we wanted as people would unknowingly walk into the scene or smile and wave to the camera; we were also concerned that equipment could get stolen. After 4 hours and a half empty battery we left the centre and decided to scrap the Shopping Centre scene from our opening as after heavy contemplation we found that it was quite useless in corresponding with the message and theme of our opening.
