Genre and Sub genre

Genre is a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content. In film, genre lets the audience know what type of film they are watching; whether it be a horror, thriller, comedy or science fiction. People like different types of films and genre lets them know if a certain film is going to meet their expectations. For example if I didn't like horror films the genre alone would let me know what I was getting myself into (e.g blood, gore and violence).

Sub genre is a a subcategory within a particular genre. There are many sub genres in Thriller;
Mystery/Suspense

Psychological

Scifi

Spy

Romance

Political

Crime

Action
The thriller genre is targeted at 16 to 25 year olds as this is the age group that typically likes thriller the best. The thriller genre is also my favourite because it can be categorized into a romance, horror or even a comedy. The most interesting type of thriller to me is psychological thrillers as they break the boundaries of your typical film as they delve into agendas that aren't always the clearest and normal and for me I love these types of films because I like the aspect of not knowing what will happen next in the film I'm watching and I enjoy trying to figure out what's going on and trying to answer the many questions that are left unsolved at the end of the film.

Tower Heist is a comedy thriller. The film has a certificate of 12A so I think that it is suitable for teenagers and adults alike. You can tell by the film poster that this is going to be a comedy because it has two renowned comedian actors starring in the film (Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy) and by how the maids outfit contrasts with the smart businesslike fashion of the others. The little dog in the red outfit also adds a comedic sense to the poster as a typical thriller poster wouldn't include a little dog. The roof that they are standing on is slanted shows that whilst their facial aren't giving anything away this is is blatantly a comedy film.

Dream house is a supernatural thriller. It looks slightly creepy and dark which we can tell by the dark colours and the two little girls look particularly frightful; especially the little girl on the right turning around and staring in the direction of the camera which makes it look like she's staring at you, thus breaking the fourth wall. Another signifier that Dream house is a supernatural thriller is that the main characters; Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts seem like they are trapped inside the doorknob; this is further concluded by their slightly wary and distressed expressions.
