Genre and SubGenre

Genre - A category of artistic composition, in this case film, characterised by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

Sub-genre - Two genres intertwined e.g. Romantic thriller. Sub-genre is targeted at a wider audience. For example Romantic thriller is targeted at both men and women through it's romantic story line but has a twist of comedy which is appealing to both audiences.

The genre that has the most sub genres is Thriller. This includes;

  • Romantic
  • Suspense/Mystery
  • Physiological
  • Crime
  • Spy
  • Horror
  • Sci Fi
  • Political
  • Action/Adventure
  • Fantasy
In Time is a Romantic thriller with elements of Sci Fi. This film will appeal to both men and women due to the romance and action content in the film which is demonstrated that through the poster in which the two main characters are holding guns and Justin Timberlake's arm is glowing with numbers (sci fi element). The target audience will be 15+ because of the heavy use of weaponry in this film.

Contraband is a Action Thriller. The target audience I would say leans more towards the male audience due to the violence and gore. Also, men tend to see more action thrillers than women do (e.g Bourne Identity etc) so this film would be more for them. Also the actor Mark Wahlberg is an action/adventure type of actor so seeing him in the poster will make men more interested in seeing this film.
